post fourteen - sound in Love Actually

( POST FOURTEEN )

SOUND IN LOVE ACTUALLY

original clip

Our task was to watch the opening scene of the film ‘Love Actually’ and to look at the diegetic and non diegetic sound. We were then to make our own versions of the same sounds and add it to the muted original clip. The task was to make the new clip as similar to the original by looking at each sound and the timings of them.

our clip

This task was quite different to the 13 reasons why task because there was no diegetic sound in the whole clip, this meant that we had to focus on the non diegetic sounds, like for example Hugh Grants monologue and the background music. The 13 reasons why clip was quite different also because the song went along with the actions, but in this clip was montage of videos of people arriving at airports, with a monologue over the top. I found the 13 reasons why clip harder to recreate because there seemed to be more elements and the original had both types of sound.

For the narration we tried to find someone who sounded like Hugh Grant, or could use an accent similar to Hugh Grants, so in the end we chose Oscar. We first wrote down the script an the timings of where the breaks in the monologue were so it would fit the images, then Oscar read the script as we recorded with a phone. The quality wasn’t as good as it could have been because there was some background noise, and we were limited on time so the studio wasn’t available to us. Once we were finished with the narration, we found a song similar to the original and edited it onto the original muted clip, pausing the monologue at the same points in the original clip.

I think overall the final outcome is very good and is quite similar to the original ‘Love Actually’ scene, the music works well and the timing of the narration fits with the montage .
