THE FILM THAT MADE PEOPLE RETHINK CINEMA

There are 5 different genres in the movie, in the first 30 minutes.

Peoples perspectives and explanations of the films :
  • Mulholland Drive refuses to explain itself or even follow a single plotline. We're given two fragmented telling's of the same story with sudden character name changes, repeated scenes from different perspectives and incongruous forays into horror and comedy which completely rupture the plot.
  • Mulholland Drive is psychotically lucid, oppressively strange, but with a powerfully erotic and humanly intimate dimension that Lynch never quite achieved elsewhere. Its dream-like qualities give rise to many confusing and unexplained things that naturally encourage interpretation.
  • The film was divided between Betty's dream world and her reality. It could be a drug-induced fantasy, or even a personal reinterpretation of someone's life before they die, but it is a viewer-created film where you discover only what it means to you.

Others say the first half is a dream sequence idealising the relationship between the two girls and the second half is a straight narrative of their failed relationship and the eventual hiring of a hit man.
